The Gin Thing

The Gin Thing

I’m sure you all know by now that included in the long list of things I love are running, eating, vino and gin.

For our first wedding anniversary, we were able to indulge in most!

On the day of our anniversary, we were celebrating with family, as it was also the Saturday closest to my brother in law, Andrew’s, 40th Birthday. His two eldest sons, Kieran and Aidan, were to be player escorts that day at the Partick Thistle v Motherwell game, and so we went along to see them – and to show support of course!

It was a gloriously sunny day, and we were able to sit in the sunshine, soaking up the fun and the atmosphere. When the boys came out onto the pitch, we couldn’t see Aidan, who is 4. He was escort for Scott Fox, the goalie, and Scott had scooped Aidan up and carried him onto the pitch! Too cute!

Here’s some pics, just to illustrate 😉

After the game, the boys were able to head back to a meet and greet with the players, and one of my other nephews, Liam, was able to go with them. I think they had a ball!

Afterwords, it was back to the Donnelly’s house for a bit of a party. As @TheWelshWookie and I were heading to Edinburgh the next day, we went to our hotel and celebrated with a bottle of fizz, overlooking George Square.

And yes. That’s not an optical illusion. This 4 star hotel in the city centre really DID give us hugely different glass sizes to enjoy our fizz with. And @TheWookie had to open it himself 😮 . And no, we won’t be back.

Sunday arrived with heavy rain 😦 but we headed to Edinburgh, excited for our short trip. We made our way to 56 North, where my friends, Pauline and Gavin, had treated us to an afternoon tea with gin tasting 😀 Hurrah!

We were greeted with a really friendly welcome, and with the fab news that Pauline & Gavin had treated us to a bottle of fizz! Yay!

We settled down with around 20 or so others, eager to get started. This was the joyous sight in front of us….

11018100_10205875584024731_8213120883886940178_n

The two guys hosting the session took us through the first four gins which were all strikingly different. The pace was relaxed, and there was no rush at all. We had a selection of different mixers to try, and the whole session was interactive – we could ask questions, and add comments – good or bad!

We then had a short break, with afternoon tea of sandwiches and small cakes, before starting again with the final four gins. I won’t spoil it for anyone by telling you which gins we tried, what we found out about them, or which were my favourites. You can try for yourselves!

After the session, we bagged a great window table, with the sun – newly surfaced through the rain – beating in. The bar is stocked with around 300 different gins, so I chatted with the barman, telling him what I liked in a gin so that he could recommend a gin for me. I had a Daffy’s, which is a small batch gin made in Edinburgh, while @TheWelshWookie had a Hoxton grapefruit and coconut gin. Yummy! They serve their gins in gorgeous continental style goblets with ice, a suggested tonic, and a garnish designed to compliment the flavours.

We had some lunch with our fizz- @TheWookie had a burger, I had a gorgeous chicken caesar salad with a poached egg. It was delish!

We finished off with another gin each – @TheWookie had a Brecon Welsh gin, while I had a Rock Rose, which may well be my new favourite – it, too, is a small batch Scottish gin. We then headed to our hotel, to get ready for our evening in the city – with the ghosts!

A Friday Funny

A Friday Funny

Happy Friday all! Hope you all have a busy weekend, with lots of running planned 🙂

I hope you’ve survived today, being Friday the 13th, and a full moon. Spooky!

I stumbled across this on the satire site Waterford Whispers News and it really made me laugh. I hope you enjoy it for what it is, no offence is intended!

Jogging Couples

@TheWelshWookie and I are settling down with a Cava to watch Spain v The Netherlands.

What are your plans for tonight? Do you ever run holding hands with anyone? 😉

News Round Up

News Round Up

Hello! How has your week been?

I have a couple of wee bits of news to share with you tonight:

Fever Struck

Have you been affected by the condition ‘world cup fever’? Be careful – it can be serious! 😉

So, tonight we see the kick off of the world cup. As an auntie to seven nephews, I think that football is going to be an important topic of conversation over the next few weeks! To keep us interested, we’ve had a family sweepstake, and my teams are France and Japan! @TheWelshWookie has Germany and Equador. Tonight’s game sees my dad and my brother Joe going head to head.

Mo Runs

In other news, Mo Farah has announced that he will be running the 5,000 and 10,000 metres at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Hurrah! I’m really looking forward to seeing him run the 10,000m.

Expansion

In my post last week, I’d mentioned that we’d gone to Campbeltown on an errand. We had something to collect. Do you want to know what it is?

It’s………….

20140612-184447-67487638.jpg 20140612-184446-67486246.jpg

Yip; an exercise bike! So, our home gym is now complete. We have the bike to complement the rowing machine, the treadmill, the free weights, resistance bands, etc. Now that I’ve started my marathon training, I think I have to take my cross training a bit more seriously, and not count a walk to the cafe as cross training! 😉

Yesterday, I did 18K on the bike. My legs were burning, using long neglected muscles, but I feel fine today, fortunately. DOMS might kick in tomorrow, though! My little toe is still pretty sore from the blister and bruising from Sunday, so I’m going to give it a couple more days and give it a test on Saturday’s long run.

So, who’s your pick for the World Cup?

Coos on the Beach

Coos on the Beach

Yesterday, @TheWelshWookie and I had a busy day.

We started our Saturday off with a little run, involving a mahoosive hill, followed by a dip in the hot tub. It was a beautifully sunny day!

After an early lunch, we headed to Campbeltown, on an errand. I’ll reveal more about that later in the week 😉

On our way, we saw this:

20140601-191940-69580042.jpg

And we also saw a few wakeboarders out enjoying the weather.

While there, we were lucky enough to see the pupils from the local school in a football tournament. It looked like they had a brilliant time, and the weather couldn’t have been better for them! Not only were there schools from around Argyll, but also from Dumbarton, Glasgow and other places. Everyone seemed to have a wonderful time!

20140601-191941-69581799.jpg 20140601-191940-69580997.jpg

We then headed to Muneroy Tearoom in Southend, which is the most southerly point on the Kintyre peninsula. Southend is also the place where St Columba set foot in Scotland, and has a cracking beach!

At the tearoom, we had FANTASTIC cake. They post pictures of their latest home baking delights, and we were not disappointed. @TheWookie had a Butterscotch Cream sponge, I had a Mint Choc cake. Wow. It was served slightly warm, with the icing just going gooey and was sprinkled with mint aero and had mint aero bubbles too. Oh, my. It was nom nom nom!

20140601-191944-69584061.jpg

Given that the weather was so good, we drove back to Campbeltown the scenic route, and it was beautiful. Ailsa Craig and the Isle of Arran were partially hidden by the haze caused by the sunshine on the sea. We even saw some Highland Cows Heilan’ Coos sunbathing on the beach! Not something you get to see every day!

20140601-191942-69582658.jpg 20140601-191943-69583458.jpg

Today, I wore my RnR Madrid vest on a run for the first time, and got in an 8 miler. It was warm! So, of course, I finished up with another dip in the hot tub.

20140601-191944-69584594.jpg

The GB Relay has begun today: good luck to all those running this week, and we’ll see you on Sunday in Argyll! 🙂

How has your weekend been?

Weekend Recap

Weekend Recap

After temporarily disappearing from Blogland over the weekend, I thought I’d explain why.

Friday night, @TheWelshWookie and I had the Hue and Cry gig that I was telling you about last week, and it was brilliant! The Kane brothers were entertaining as ever, and the play through of their ‘Bitter Suite’ album remained true to the original, with a few of the tracks updated a little. It was amazing!

photo 1

We had a couple of drinks at the venue, along with a couple more later, including an apple & guava cider, and a nice GnT. Perfect.

20140318-192200.jpg

On Saturday morning, we had a 5K planned. But, although I certainly felt fresh enough for a run, I decided to sleep in instead. It was bliss! We then hit the shops, as I had a few more bits to pick up for the wedding. @TheWookie got a new long sleeved running top from Run4It, which is lovely.

And, on Saturday afternoon, we had a great time: my nephew, Kieran, was a mascot at the SPL football match between Partick Thistle and Hibernian! He’s only five, but he was so great, and had a brilliant day. Kieran is a huge football fan, and Partick Thistle are his team: he goes to the games with his dad and granda.

Kieran went along early on Saturday with his dad and his granda, where they met the players and had a tour of the stadium. Next, he (along with the other two mascots) had a kick about on the pitch while the players warmed up. And just before kick off,  they led the teams onto the pitch, and were there for the referee’s coin toss.

He must have been a lucky mascot, as Thistle won 3-1!

@TheWelshWookie and I went along to support him, along with his mum (my sis) and his brother, Aidan who – at three – was going to his first ever football match. He loved it too! My other nephews Ryan and Liam also came along, as did my other sis Angie, her BF Ryan and Kieran’s auntie and uncle Alison and Chris. It was a fab family day out!

20140318-192128.jpg 20140318-192146.jpg 20140318-192137.jpg

I even, erm, ‘enjoyed’ a pie and bovril at half time 😉

BizkkfFIEAAx_Sv

After the game, we were all invited to the hospitality suite where Kieran was presented with a signed football by the Man of the Match, Kallum Higgenbotham. Lucky boy!

We then had a fab night back at my sis’ house, with a few vinos and a Chinese takeaway.

Sunday was grocery shopping, and driving home, tired after a busy-but-fun couple of days!

Have you ever been a sports mascot before?

Superbowl Sunday

Superbowl Sunday

Hi everyone! Who’s excited about tonight’s football?

20140202-155137.jpg
This pic made me smile a lot!

20140202-155123.jpg
I always have mixed feelings: it always seems a long time until the start of next season!
For us in the UK, it’s on into the wee small hours of the morning: I usually last until the half time entertainment, then fall asleep 😉
I saw this on Fitfluential’s facebook page, and thought I’d share:

Will you be participating in fitfluential’s challenge or will you be enjoying beer and snacks? Who are you supporting?

Being Thankful.

Being Thankful.

I think I may have been born on the wrong continent. I LOVE Thanksgiving; it is so powerful!

While many of you are celebrating, holidaying and having family time, I’ll be working: but I’ll be thankful for that. I’ll be thinking about all of my own blessings, and those of my family today.

I’ll then be heading home to share in your traditions: good food, good company and football.

So, whatever you are doing, and whomever you are spending it with: enjoy. My thankful blessings are with you all!

Beer? Check. Popcorn? Check. Hot dogs? Check. Cheat Sheet? Check. Draft Strategy? Well, kinda-check. Tonight is draft night!

fantasy-fear

I’m not as well prepared as I’d like to be; I’m drafting using a new laptop, and on a website I’ve never used. But I have some ideas about how I’m hoping to navigate this evening, which is something!

No running talk from me tonight; it’s all about running backs for now!

I’m looking forward to a new season, which is bringing with it some significant changes, too:

See you on the other side, for a team check! 😀

Fantasy Football Friday

Fantasy Football Friday

Well, I have good news for you. If you’re reading this, it means that you’ve made it to the end of another working week. Hooray!

its-friday-you-say

Tonight, I’m supposed to be doing a 4 mile run. But the rain is lashing down. The wind is howling. I have stuff to do, so I’m chickening out rearranging my training schedule slightly. Besides, I have wine that needs to be consumed 😉

1001337_10151769329915348_1862167325_n

Actually, I have housework to do. And packing.  THEN it will be wine o’clock.

I can’t believe that football season is almost upon us already, and it’s fantasy draft time this weekend!

time-flies

I’ve been in a fantasy league for 9 years. This year, @TheWelshWookie and I are in a different league, so my 10th season will also feel like a new start, in many ways. We’ve also moved from ESPN to NFL. So, as part of these changes, I’ve been reviewing my past draft strategies, and working out what has, and hasn’t gone so well in the past. Most years, I’ve gone for some form of handcuff deal, and it’s probably worked out well 75% of the time. As we have a new league, we’re starting with no keepers, which seems odd. I’ve had Wes Welker as a keeper since forever, so it’ll be weird not starting with him automatically on my team!

Here’s some of my prep scribbles so far….. no peeking too closely, now!

IMG_2440

Bring on Sunday, I can’t wait!

On running related matters, my bib and medal hanger arrived…… woo hoo!

IMG_2441

I’m just deciding where the best place is for it to go.

And my Nike+ FuelBand has conked out on me, so I’m a little disappointed about that. I’m hoping the Nike Store will exchange it this weekend.

Today’s Life Lesson: sometimes good folks really do think alike 😉

Are you a football fan? Do you play fantasy football?
