After finishing on a high last week with a dreich-but-wonderful 10k, this week has been a little different: lower mileage to accommodate an incredibly busy week. I did what I could, and I’m sure my back and my knee are grateful for lower mileage!

Monday-

I didn’t want to push too hard after Sundays run, and so we headed out for a daytime walk at Kintarbert Forest. We managed to dodge most of the showers, which was nothing short of miraculous! It did feel good to get out in the fresh air, with no concern for time or distance.

Tuesday –

After a hugely busy day at work that was full of unexpected events I was in need of some headspace. It was another very wet evening, and I was pushed for time but I was grateful to be able to get my trainers on and run around the harbour.

Wednesday –

It was another very busy day, and I knew I wouldn’t manage to run on Thursday or Friday due to work, so I squeezed in a short evening run. Not much to say: dark, wet, short but very much needed!

Sunday –

I think it’s fair to say that on Sunday morning I was desperate to get out for a run after a few days of having no time for it. I kept it short, and I think I’ll be grateful for that over the next few weeks, I know how much our bodies need to cut back every so often. We headed out to the timber route above Torinturk and I ran a lovely but slow 5k in sunshine. It was gorgeous! It was a run that was good for the soul.

I finished the week with 12/13 of my Great Run Solo – November Accumulator runs done, so only one to go! Roll on next week to get that completed!

If we were in any doubt about what season we are in, this week was a stark reminder that we’re definitely easing our way through autumn, with some pretty relentless wet and windy weather at times. Perfect running weather, of course! I had lots on this week between work, Fèis, prepping for AGMs and so exercise took a little bit of a back seat. I did manage some runs, of course.

Here’s how my week worked out.

Monday-

It was very dark by the time I finished work, but I was determined to start the week well with a run. I also had new reflective Sweaty Betty leggings to try out! My head torch had another outing and I ran 4 miles around the harbour. It was incredibly mild, and it was great to see other runners out too, despite the showery weather. My verdict on the leggings? Incredibly reflective, great pocket, not quite as comfortable as my Lululemon leggings but a close second.

Wednesday-

Well, on Wednesday evening it wasn’t just damp, it was pouring down, and the thought of heading out wasn’t filling me with joy. But, as is often the case when I got out there I loved it. I really do love running in the rain! The photo is of Tarbert Castle- the picture doesn’t do how it appeared any justice, it was only half lit, creating an eery shadow across its harbour front.

Friday-

I had a day off and a trip to the hairdressers planned, so I wanted to get a run in first. I’d been looking forward to a daytime run all week, but when I got out there I just wasn’t feeling it. As soon as I started running I was kicking myself for not heading to a trail, and I think that was the start and end of enjoying it! Ah well, you’ve got to have tough runs to appreciate the fun ones.

I also received my Great Run Solo Halloween medal, which was pretty cool!

Sunday-

And just like that, back to loving it! On Sunday morning I headed out for a socially distanced trail run, which I was looking forward to. The plan was to get in 10k to cover both run 9/13 of my November Accelerator and my virtual 10k MoRun. During the week I had received my 10k medal, so thought I’d best get my run in to earn it!

We started out with dry, mild sunny conditions and after about 1.5 miles they quickly deteriorated when the heavens opened and we were absolutely soaked within minutes! All I could think about was my poor new hair colour! 🤣

But, it was a lovely run, it made a lovely change to chat and run, and the miles ticked by. Medal earned, even if it was a slower, chattier way of earning it, I loved it!

After last week’s decent mileage, I’m afraid that this week’s mileage has dropped pretty drastically. Being back at work and with too many daytime commitments has meant that I’ve had to run in the evening, which means no solo trail runs at the moment. But here’s how my week shaped up:

Monday

After a long day at work, I was itching to get out for a run, but with the clocks changing it was dark very early. I had my new head torch to try out, so I tentatively tried to get one last evening trail under my belt before winter. Alas, it just felt too remote and risky, in case anything happened (I am a clumsy runner). My torch really did help, but not enough to make me feel entirely comfortable on my own. The darkness has also put paid to most of my scenic snaps for now!

Tuesday

Another long day and an evening meeting meant I only had a short window to squeeze in a run. I’ll need to do more Village runs now it’s dark, and that means I’ll need to be careful as my back/knee definitely fares better on trails. It also means I won’t get the same elevation so I’ll have to add in some hill training.

With work happening around the harbour I was grateful for my head torch!

Thursday

It was a really wet day, but that didn’t stop me from getting out for my run. I quite like running in the rain- it’s the combination of rain and wind that I find unappealing!

Friday

After two road runs my back wasn’t feeling great so rather than run, we went for a walk. Better than sitting indoors, and we had a fabulous moon!

Sunday

I had planned to run on Saturday but Storm Aidan put paid to that! I use the time instead to do lots of prep for our forthcoming Fèis an Tairbeirt online weekend, and I also read this in two short sittings- it is well worth a read!

But on Sunday I was back out on the trails- in daylight, woo hoo! With the aftermath of Storm Aidan and the forecast for more high winds due at any time I changed my plan from a 10k, down to a 5k. My back was still niggly so I thought that was a more sensible plan.

In the end, though, I did 4 miles, and loved it!

Hopefully I’ll get a few more miles under my belt this week. I finished off the Hallowe’en Accumulator on Wednesday, and kick started the November accumulator today, so I’m hoping to get that well underway in the coming week.

What a week! The weather has been dreadful but that hasn’t stopped me from getting out in the fresh Argyll air. Ok, so being off work all week has really helped as I’ve been able to make the most of daylight, and I’ve really enjoyed it. Here’s how my week went.

Monday

After being away for the weekend and clocking up over 1,000 miles in the car, it felt great to get back out on a trail again. I stuck to the timber route at Torinturk and kept my first run back short as I had new trail shoes to try out. I have a pair of Asics, which I’ve never worn before but it turns out they are super comfortable and I think I might grow to love them!

Tuesday

We went for a wander, and we didn’t quite manage to duck all of the showers! We stuck to the village, heading out over the high road, along to Garvel and over towards shell beach.

Wednesday

I wanted to spend the midweek point of our time off doing a long run, and so I headed to the timber route once again as I wanted to get beyond the 4 mile mark where I turned around a few weeks ago. Although it was dry when I set out, the rain soon started meaning I was absolutely soaked very quickly! No matter, I don’t mind running in the rain, and as it was unseasonably mild I didn’t bother fighting with a rain jacket. My new trail shoes were great, and I found myself running a lovely and comfortable half marathon- my first for quite some time! It was lovely to finish my run with a view of a rainbow!

Thursday

After Wednesday’s escapade, we went for a trail walk on Thursday morning, heading up into the Kintarbert Forest, taking the climbing road rather than the loop. I had an afternoon meeting so although we were enjoying our ramble we had to turn back all too soon!

Friday

I pulled on my trail trainers once again and headed off to run the circular route by the Giants Grave. I took a short detour into the trees to reconnect to nature, but didn’t venture up to the Dun- it was pretty slippery underfoot so I’ll save than until the spring I think! The route was boggy, muddy but lots and lots of fun!

Sunday

I was tempted to take another test day but instead I though I’d get another short run in to round off my holiday. I headed to the West Loch, building in the hill at Carrick cemetery and finishing at the harbour itself. Boy, was it windy out there!

It was also my last run in my Lunarglide 8s, which have now done about 350 miles so it’s time to retire them. New trainers next week then, but these have been favourites for some time.

So that’s me now ticked off 13/15 runs for my Great Run Solo Hallowe’en Accumulator. Woo hoo! All in all, I clocked in 25.5 running miles this week, and almost 35 miles in total, with some pretty decent elevation too, at 2.315 ft. Not too bad! If only every week could be like this- but it will be back to lower mileage now that the clocks have changed and the evening will be darker after work. Winter running is now the focus!

Last week, I ‘front loaded’ my workouts so I could get some exercise in before we headed away for a few days at the end of last week. It was great to get away for a few days for the first time since before last Christmas, but running was still on my mind!

But here’s what I made time for before we headed off:

Monday –

After Sunday’s long run, I wanted to give my legs a break and so we went for an evening walk instead. We went to Kintyre Forest, as I wanted to get some hills in and I also wanted to test out my old head torch. Turns out that it’s nowhere near up to the job- it’s fine to ‘be seen’ on a road run, but is nowhere near powerful enough to run trails with when it’s dark. We started our walk just as the sun was setting and finished in darkness, fortunately we had other torches with us too! We also caught a couple of heavy downpours, but those were fine!

Tuesday-

I was back running again, for run 8/15 of my Great Run Solo Hallowe’en Accumulator. I changed things up a little, deciding at the last minute to stick to the village, and so I thought I’d do a couple of laps of Tarbert Castle loop, as well as running up Big Brae on my way. And that Brae is always a tough one!

Wednesday-

Wednesday was the first day of our leave, and I wanted to celebrate with a short birthday run. My legs were feeling a little tight, probably a combination of Sunday’s run and the hills the previous evening so I thought I’d just enjoy a short road run instead of a longer trail run. I ran to the West Loch, but still included the hill up to Carrick cemetery just to get some elevation in. I fair enjoyed it, and counted it as run 9/15 of my Great Run Solo Hallowe’en Accumulator.

Pace: 11.54/m

Elevation: 217ft

While we were away I stocked up on a pair of new trail shoes ready of winter, and I also bought some new road trainers, as they were a bargain and I couldn’t resist! 🤣 I also stocked up on some other gear- leggings, a swiftly tech tee and a long sleeved top for winter running. Not a bad haul, though I’ve still to get a head torch. With the clocks changing next weekend I’ll need to get that ASAP if I still want to fit in some evening runs.

Last week was a good ‘un. I had a solid week both in terms of fitness and eating well, and I had some fun along the way!

Here’s how it all worked out:

Monday: run. Hill repeats with some of the Jog Scotland crew- something is never do by myself. A great start to the week

Tuesday: walk. I was too late for classes😏

Wednesday: Jog Scotland Easy Run

Thursday: lunchtime hill run, followed by a fantastic PiYo Class in the evening

Friday: at home PiYo and a walk

Saturday: a walk around Glasgow’s West End

Sunday: a walk around the village

I didn’t manage to fit in a long run, and although I felt like I’d missed out at the time my legs today have definitely felt the benefit of three days without running. I went for a 10k morning run and I felt strong. I also managed my fastest 5k and 10k time in well over a year, including a sub 30 minute 5k. Yay!

We’re just over three weeks away from the Glen Scotia Marathon relay and we’ve just agreed who is running which section. It’s getting exciting!

My running mojo has been great recently, and I think today has helped to reinforce that too 👍🏻 But I know that can be a fragile thing, so here’s some motivation whether you are on a running high- or low:

Good morning! And what a glorious morning it is. The sun is shining and I’ve been for a run already- 4 gloriously sunny miles☀️

I’ve had a good week- my fitness plans have been on track and I’ve eaten well. Here’s a quick recap:

Monday: we went for a lovely walk around the harbour. After a busy weekend it was a good start to the week.

Tuesday: only one class, but we used the Pilates hoops again at Sculpt which really challenged my muscles in new ways. The DOMS were real!

Wednesday: an informal run with the Jog Scotland crew. We’re now on a summer break but still meeting informally until the next session in the autumn.

Thursday: two lots of activity for me- I had a trail run at lunchtime followed by PiYo in the evening. It was the last session of round 61 and it was tough!

Friday: I spent the day doing housework and managed to rack up around 10k steps so I did well for a rest day!

Saturday: we had the end-of-block run with Jog Scotland, a Viking 5k, since it was the Viking Festival Weekend. I started slowly and picked up pace as I went , running mile 3 at 9’40 pace- quick for me! We all were given fab mugs with Tarbert Jog Scotland on one side and a pic of Tarbert on the other. Love them!

In the afternoon we spent it in the sunshine, tidying the garden: grass cutting, strimming, jet washing and weeding. We were out there for over 5 hours, and I racked up over 20,000 steps 😊

Sunday: the weather was lovely, so we went for a walk to recover from the day before, before watching the Viking boat carry later in the day.

Loved it! I’m off to a good start this week, but we have no classes so I’ll have to rely on my own momentum to keep myself focussed this week.

Hello, everyone. I’m afraid I’m suffering from post holiday blues over here, and a tough week at work hasn’t helped with that. Ah well, we all get those kinds of weeks, don’t we?

On a positive note, I had a really good week in terms of my health and exercise targets:

Monday: we went for a walk after work which helped to blow away some cobwebs!

Tuesday: I had a ‘Tuesday Triple’: a lunchtime Run with Alison followed by Sculpt and Trigger Point Pilates in the evening. We focussed on hands and feet, and I felt great afterwards, although was shattered on Wednesday!

Wednesday: Jog Scotland, we did an easy 5k

Thursday: PiYo

Friday: another evening walk.

We had a busy weekend, Saturday was spent setting up for Fèis an Tairbeirt’s annual Ceilidh which was a fab night! Many hands help with clear up, so it wasn’t a late evening. Sunday was much quieter, and very much a day of relaxing and recharging.

Here’s a thought as we head into a new week:

Let’s focus not on what we say we will do, but on what we actually do. Go smash it!

Happy Easter! I’ve had a wonderful weekend- how about you?

I was still getting over my chest infection this week so my activity levels haven’t been back to normal yet, but I am getting there. Meanwhile my eating has been, well, far from ideal – but I’m really not worried about it. Back on track between now and Florida 😉

Monday: travelling back from our trip away, but we did get a walk in. Nothing else.

Tuesday: back at class- yes! Sculpt was great, it’s tough, challenging, but feels very good indeed. That was followed by Trigger Point Pilates, which was ace.

Wednesday: back to Jog Scotland and it was my first run in 10 days. We ran for 40 minutes, which was around 3.6 miles. Thoroughly enjoyed it, and boy did I need it!

Thursday: a walk in Lochgilphead

Friday: three hours of gardening- I’m counting it!

Saturday: a walk to and from Portavadie as well as a lovely day in the Spa there

Sunday: a trip to Gigha, so we enjoyed a fab walk around the island

All in all, I still have a way to go to get back to my previous fitness levels before my chest infection, but a bank holiday 10k run today has helped to boost my confidence with that.
