Piping for the Weekend

Piping for the Weekend

Hi everyone! Here, on the West Coast of Scotland, we’ve reached the weekend, and @TheWelshWookie and I have spent the evening scrubbing the kitchen…… it’s Spring Clean Weekend here! A bit early, but, oh well!

We’re just about to have some pasta, some vino, and relax. Tomorrow morning it’s the living room and bathroom’s turn for a good clean, before the Six Nations rugby starts, of course! 😉

Here’s something to kick start your weekend: a lil’ bit of Red Hot Chilli Pipers covering Avicii courtesy of BBC Radio 1.

Enjoy!

The Sisters

The Sisters

No, not MY sisters. THE sisters!

It’s the restaurant we visited for my mum’s birthday on Saturday night.

Jacqueline and Pauline O’Donnell are the sisters behind these two Glasgow restaurants, and we visited their Glasgow Kelvingrove restaurant.

The venue is quite small, but very comfortable, and it was very busy when we arrived. The menu was amazing: all freshly prepared, locally sourced ingredients, and it was cooked so well. I’d love to make a return visit!

To start, I had brioche topped with mushrooms and a port and red onion chutney. The portion was very generous. I then had the fish of the day, which was a fillet of sea bass in a lobster cream sauce, with some chive mash and queenie scallops. Wow. It was amazing.

While everyone else tucked into dessert, I had a coffee, as I couldn’t fit one in!

The service from our waitress, Kirsty, was fantastic.

I also found out that Jacqueline, who is head chef, will be one of the chefs representing Scotland on the 2014 Great British Menu, which is great! It’s the first time that a chef from Glasgow will be competing, and the first Scottish woman to compete. She will be following in the footsteps of other Scottish competitors, like Tom Kitchin, Alan Murchison and Tony Singh.

I’m looking forward to seeing how she does!

Did you eat well this weekend?

A Lull

A Lull

The title of today’s post is a little deceptive. I feel like I’ve been completely run off my feet recently: mostly at work, but also in my down time, what with having a wedding to plan!

But that means that my running has taken a back seat this week, and I’m missing it! To be honest, as my training for the Madrid RnR half doesn’t begin properly until early February, this busyness has come at a very convenient time 😉

I’m excited to share some of the wedding details with you (don’t worry, I’ll warn anyone not interested, so that they can avoid the posts) but it’ll have to wait a few more days. I’m planning on getting the invites out early next week so, all will be revealed after then!

In the mean time, I’m going to head upstairs to the treadmill to say ‘hi!’ to it with a short run. No doubt that after a few minutes I’ll wonder why the heck I was missing it! 😮

How’s your week going? Are you having a busy or a quiet one? Have you missed any workouts?

A Sunday Run for #MegsMiles

A Sunday Run for #MegsMiles

Like many of you, I’ve been touched by the story of Meg Menzies, who was tragically killed by an alleged drunk driver while out doing a training run last week.

I’m sure we’ve all had the same thoughts: sympathy for her family, comparisons, and the inevitable ‘it could have been me’.

And so, in honour of Meg, @TheWelshWookie and I ran 5K today. We chose to run our favourite training distance, following our favourite route around the harbour. I think that’s the most fitting way to honour this runner I didn’t know: getting out there, doing what we love, in the way that we love it.

Rest peacefully, Meg.

A Day of Deliciousness

A Day of Deliciousness

Although this is mainly a running blog, and I try to keep it focussed on running and eating well, sometimes lots of times, my life creeps in!

I’m sure that might bore some of you, and I’m sorry about that, but hey- it’s my blog 😉

So, after that intro, I think I’d better warn you. In twelve week’s time, I’ll be married. And so, that means some of my posts might include wedding talk over the coming couple of months (yawn, I hear you say!).

Today has been a day of getting organised. We only set the date back in late October, and although we have booked the main things, not many of the details have been ironed out. Hence, today is planning day! 😮

I’m trying not to turn into Bridezilla!

Of course, it also means that I have a fancy frock to fit into. And so, the healthy eating has been moved right back to the top of my agenda, where it should be! Last night I had a fab salmon salad for dinner. It was amazing! I had it with a couple of new potatoes, some chilli beetroot and light coleslaw.

So far today, I’ve had a breakfast smoothie, with strawberries, raspberries, yoghurt, chia, flax and protein powder:

Followed by another delicious Food Doctor pot for lunch:

And we have a lean pork casserole in the slow cooker for dinner. It’s smelling yummy!

What’s on your menu today? Any wedding tips you’d like to share?

Thinking About Training Plans

Thinking About Training Plans

Well, we have made it to Friday. I’ll admit, there were times this week I wasn’t sure whether Friday was creeping closer, or pulling further away!

This weekend, I’ll be running and doing some wedding planning. Someone has to!

But I’ll also be reading this:

photo

I have been perusing various training plans, trying to see which one is most likely to suit me for marathon training. Up until now, I have always used Nike training plans. But for the forthcoming RnR Madrid half, I’ve decided to try out Hal Higdon’s training plan. If I’m honest, the iPhone app seems pretty cool, so that persuaded me!

I’m really looking forward to comparing it to the ones I’ve used in the past, to see how it fits my running.

But, the wonderful Full Moon Runner suggested I read Greg McMillan’s book. I downloaded it last night, and got stuck in!

I’m only a few chapters into it, but so far, I’m already thinking differently about how I run, and how I train. I can absolutely understand why you’d personalise a training plan, and I’m excited about that, too! I’m sure that this book will be devoured over the weekend, and I promise to give you all my views on it 😉

Which training plan do you use? Do you develop your own?  Have you read this book yet?

Still Excited

Still Excited

Evening, all! It’s Thursday….. almost the weekend…… where has January gone? It’s flashing past me!

PROTEST-SIGN

That would help!

Any hoo, I’ve been super excited for the past couple of days, since signing up for my first marathon. Thank you, everyone who has commented, encouraged and congratulated me: I hope you stick around over the coming months, I think I’m going to need your support!

It’s great to see that there are quite a few of us first timers working towards the same goal: we can share ups, downs and in-betweens; and we can benefit from the wisdom of all of those who already have a marathon (or a few) in the bag.

2014 is shaping up to be quite a year!

So, I was excited to get some running in tonight. I did a really easy 5K on the treadmill tonight, followed by 15 minutes on the rower. It felt great!

20140116-200417.jpg

Though I’m looking forward to getting outside to run maybe tomorrow, but definitely over the weekend! It’s the first weekend that@TheWelshWookie and I have had at home for months, so we’re looking forward to a run, and a relaxing time.

How’s your week been so far? Any weekend plans? Would you love or hate time travel, and why?

Foodie Friday

Foodie Friday

Welcome to the weekend, y’all!

Today, I’ve been thinking about all of those lucky ducks in Orlando, running the various Run Disney races! In particular, I was thinking about PirateBobcat who is half way through the Dopey Challenge.

I’d love to run that! Maybe next year! 😉

This week, I tried had to climb back onto the healthy eating bandwagon, I really did. And I’ve been only partially successful! Here’s some of my eats from this week, and last week:

Here’s the seafood starter we had at the New Year Gala Dinner. It was awesome!
20140110-195837.jpg
We enjoyed some lovely treats: marinated sun dried tomatoes and mozzarella. Yum!

Here’s an attempt at some healthier eating. It as like a healthy pot noodle, and was delish!
20140110-195856.jpg
Aren’t these mini hot dogs soooo cute?

Posh chocolate…
Maybe next week I’ll get back on track…. 😉
Huggin’ Stuff

Huggin’ Stuff

I’m not a big hugger. Of people, I mean.

But I recently posted about how I hug Christmas Trees! 😮 You’ll find that post here.

Then, I was reminded that I actually hug loadsa stuff!

All things, mind, not so much people…..

Here’s me hugging the 150 years anniversary monument, at King’s Cross Underground station:

And here’s me hugging the R’n’R sign in Dublin:

Finally, for now, here’s me hugging a large garden ornament in Iona:

Sorry, it was a flashless night time pic 😉 Maybe my huggin’ addiction is worse than I thought?

Do you have any weird habits that someone else has pointed out to you?

Foodie (and drinkie) Friday

Foodie (and drinkie) Friday

Happy Friday everyone!

TGIF

It’s Friday the Thirteenth: anyone superstitious out there? If you are, pretend you’re Spanish: they’re fine with Friday the Thirteenth, but not Tuesday the Thirteenth 😮

What have you been up to today? I’ve kicked off a week’s holiday! Woop!

And what better way to spend the day than shopping, eating and drinking with my mum?

photo (11)

We had a great mooch around Glasgow, picking up the final pieces we needed for Christmas. We also had a make up session at Clinique, which was fun! The selfie above is BEFORE the makeover, in case you were wondering!

In keeping with yesterday’s ‘Season’s Eatings’ post, the festive feasting continues. We had tapas for lunch, at Barca in Princes Square: it was delish!

photo (12)

We then had a lil’ refreshment at the Concert Hall before heading home.

I’ve had a lovely day!

Did you all have a good Friday?
