Commonwealth Games Marathon

Commonwealth Games Marathon

Many of you will remember my post last year, when I excitedly announced that I had secured tickets for judo and for athletics, including the 10k, at the Commonwealth Games being hosted in Glasgow this summer.

I’m really looking forward to it!

Yesterday, the marathon route was announced, and I’m so excited by it! There are some great vantage points along the route, and it covers loads of roads I’ve run along before!

It begins in Glasgow Green, which is where I ran the MoRun back in November, and is also the finish for the Great Scottish Run too.

It then heads out along the River Clyde to the SECC and The Hydro, and over the Squinty Bridge which is also part of the GSR route.

Next, the route goes through Bellahouston and Pollok Parks, which is part of the route for the Glasgow Women’s 10k which I didn’t run in 2013, but I have run it 4 times before, and it’s over 10 years since my first one!

The route then follows the old GSR route back through Glasgow’s south side, and back into Glasgow Green. It’s a great route!
I now have a few months to work out where I’ll spectate from 😀

Meanwhile, the first week of half marathon training has gone well. I got in a slow 4 miler today, the first of my ‘long’ runs, I know they’re just going to build from there. Mileage for this week: 13 miles. Bring on week two!

In wedding news, it’s my hen weekend next weekend, and I can’t wait! 🙂 It’s now less than 9 weeks until the big day!

Do you have a long run (or a not-so-long run, like me) planned this weekend?

Ramp up the Red

Ramp up the Red

Today, it’s Ramp up the Red Day, in support of the British Heart Foundation
The aim is to encourage people to wear red and raise awareness (and raise money) for BHF and heart disease, and how if affects people from all walks of life.
I was working today, and we were supporting the campaign in work, so I busted out my red top, red beads, shiny patent red shoes, red Modalu handbag AND red coat. Too much? 😉

@TheWelshWookie was also dressed in red, as his work was supporting the event too.
In other news, I’m about to settle down to watch the opening of the Sochi Olympics- I wonder how it will compare to Danny Boyle’s London spectacular?
Happy Friday, all! Are you planning on watching much of the Winter Olympics?

Indoors and Outdoors

Indoors and Outdoors

The training is under way again, and after a couple of months of just running when I felt like it, and for as long or as short as I wanted, I’m surprised at how easily I’ve fallen back into the schedule!

I’ve always liked routine, so I suppose I shouldn’t really be surprised. Structure works for me 😉

Last night, I mixed it up a little, and did my three miler on the treadmill.

I watched the latest episode of The Following while I ran, and that helped the minutes to fly by. Turns out my teenage crush on Kevin Bacon is still there…. 😉

I also did some weights, as the show hadn’t finished by the time my run was done. I’m sticking to my plan like glue!

Tonight, it was great to get outside and run. I really, really enjoyed it. It felt great after yesterday’s cooped up run. Unusually, it was both dry AND still daylight when we headed out, but the light faded fast at the end of the run.

Here’s the view over the harbour at the end of my three miler, which is a little blurry: sorry about that! 🙂

Tomorrow’s a rest day, and I suspect that I’ll be itching to get out again come Saturday!

Are you training right now? How’s it going for you?

Countdown to Madrid

Countdown to Madrid

Tonight, the training started. The Countdown to Madrid has begun!

OK, so between now and then there’s the small matter of a wedding, but for this evening, my mind is firmly on Madrid! 🙂

Following yesterday’s rest day, my training plan called for a nice, easy 3 miler, which @TheWelshWookie and I did around the harbour as usual. It felt great! I forgot to set my Hal Higdon app, but I was able to enter my info manually.

Tonight, I’m going to settle down with my Madrid guidebook, and begin planning our post-race festivities!

Have you ever been to Madrid? Any ‘must do’s’ I should know about?

Monday Motivation

Monday Motivation

Happy Monday, everyone! I hope your hangover has cleared, and you’re now over yesterday’s big game.

Today is day one of my half marathon training programme, and it starts off with a rest day 😉 I love Hal Higdon already!

Here’s to a fun filled, run-packed, good-eating week! 😀

Cleanin’, Eatin’, Readin’

Cleanin’, Eatin’, Readin’

That just about sums up my Saturday!

@TheWelshWookie and I got stuck in to domestic duties this morning, with a spring clean of the living room and bathroom. I’m pleased to report that I have sparking surfaces, and TheWookie managed, at long last, to rid the carpet of the large wax stain caused by a slight candle meltdown incident a while back 😉

We were finished in time to enjoy some lunch before the beginning of the Six Nations rugby. I had some vegetable biryani: delish!

As I’m sure you can tell by his twitter handle, @TheWelshWookie feels rather strongly about Welsh rugby 😉 So, while he was glued to the TV, I half watched, and spent the afternoon catching up on the past couple of month’s Women’s Running and Women’s Health magazines. I had already had a quick scan through these, but it’s lovely to have time to sit, mug of tea in hand, and really read them.

I also had a slice of my grandma’s Jock’s Loaf:

It is amazing!

There’s a couple of interesting articles in them, I thought I’d share:

Tonight, we’re having some lovely salmon for dinner, and perhaps a glass of vino. Well, a girl’s got to fortify herself to finish the spring cleaning: tomorrow, it’s the turn of the bedrooms 😉

When was the last time you had some quiet reading time? What did you read?

The Invites are OUT!

The Invites are OUT!

****WARNING****WEDDING TALK AHEAD!****

We posted our wedding invites on Monday, which means that MOST guests will have received their invites over the past couple of days! 😀

If you are reading this, and you are a family member who has yet to receive their invite, then heed this SPOILER ALERT and stop reading NOW! 😉

Our wedding invites were non-traditional. They were……….

Race Bibs! Yes, we had TYVEK race bibs made up, with the date of the wedding in place of the participant race number. We also sent out safety pins, so that guests can take photos of themselves wearing their bibs, and send them to us 😉

We included ‘race instructions’ along with the invites, which included details that we’d usually find at any race event: race registration (RSVP), start line details (Church details), race photos, post race refreshments, post race entertainment, etc. 😉

We also had a QR code printed on each letter, which means that all guests have access to a specific wedding website, where there’s information about the wedding itself, accommodation, things to do in Tarbert, links, etc.

It’s so exciting!

So, what do you think of our wedding theme: Race to the Altar?

In many ways, marriage is like a race. The wedding is only the start line…. I’m having great fun, combining my love of running with my wedding planning!
